Information architecture

Information architecture (IA) is the practice of organizing, structuring, and labeling content so people can find what they need and complete tasks efficiently. It covers how you group information into categories, how you name those categories, and how you connect them through navigation and search.
Good IA is invisible when it works: users move through a product without thinking about where things are. It's the backbone that sitemaps, navigation menus, and taxonomies are built on.
Why does Information architecture matter?
A clear information architecture reduces the effort it takes users to find content, complete tasks, and trust that they're in the right place. Without it, even well-designed screens feel confusing because people can't predict where things live.
Designers typically build IA using card sorting and tree testing to understand how users mentally group content, then translate the results into sitemaps, navigation systems, and content models. It's especially important for large sites, apps, or intranets with many sections and content types.
