A design sprint is a time-boxed, five-phase process (usually run over five days) that helps teams quickly solve big problems, build prototypes, and test ideas with real users. It was popularized by Google Ventures and follows a structured path: understand, sketch, decide, prototype, and validate.
Instead of debating endlessly in meetings, a cross-functional team works together in focused sessions to align on a problem, explore solutions, and get real user feedback before committing engineering resources.
Why does a Design sprint matter?
A design sprint compresses months of debate and back-and-forth into a single focused week, so teams can test a concept before investing in full development. It's especially useful when launching a new product, tackling a complex feature, or when stakeholders disagree on direction.
By ending the week with a working prototype tested on real users, teams gather concrete evidence instead of opinions, reducing risk and saving time and money down the line.
