Rapid prototyping is the practice of quickly creating low-cost, low-fidelity versions of a product or feature so teams can test ideas and gather feedback early, before investing in polished design or code. It favors speed and iteration over perfection, using tools like paper sketches, wireframes, or clickable mockups.
Because prototypes are built fast and cheaply, they're easy to throw away or rework based on what you learn. This lets teams explore multiple directions, validate assumptions with real users, and catch problems long before development begins.
Why does Rapid prototyping matter?
Rapid prototyping matters because it shortens the feedback loop between an idea and real user input. Instead of guessing whether a concept will work, teams can put something tangible in front of users within hours or days and adjust based on what they observe.
It's commonly used early in the design process, for example sketching several navigation flows or testing a new feature concept with clickable Figma prototypes. This reduces the risk of building the wrong thing and saves significant time and money down the line.
