Persona

/pərˈsoʊnə/

A persona is a fictional yet realistic profile that represents a key segment of your users. Built from research, it captures their goals, behaviours, needs, and frustrations, turning an abstract audience into someone with a name, a face, and a story.

Because a persona is grounded in real data rather than guesswork, it gives the whole team a shared, memorable reference to design and decide around.

Why do personas matter?

Personas keep decisions focused on real people instead of a vague “average user”. By asking “what would this persona do?”, teams can prioritise features, settle debates, and shape experiences that fit the users they actually serve.

For example, a banking app might be designed very differently for cautious Clara, who checks her balance every day, than for busy Ben, who wants to move money in seconds, and naming those needs makes the trade-offs obvious.
