Facilitator
/fəˈsɪlɪteɪtər/
A facilitator is the person who runs a user-research session, interview or design workshop. Their job is to guide the conversation, ask open and unbiased questions, and create a comfortable space where participants share honestly.
A good facilitator stays neutral — avoiding leading questions, resisting the urge to “help” during usability tasks, and letting silences do their work — so the data reflects the participant, not the moderator.
Why does it matter?
Facilitation quality directly affects data quality. Leading questions or visible reactions can bias participants and invalidate an entire session.
Beyond research, skilled facilitation keeps workshops inclusive and productive, making sure quieter voices are heard and the group reaches real decisions.
