Customer Experience
/ˈkʌstəmər ɪkˈspɪəriəns/
Customer Experience (CX) is the overall impression a person forms of a brand based on every interaction they have with it, from browsing a website and talking to support to unboxing a product. It spans the entire customer journey, not just a single touchpoint, and includes emotional, functional, and practical aspects of that relationship.
Unlike User Experience, which focuses on how someone uses a specific product or interface, CX looks at the bigger picture: marketing, sales, service, and everything in between. A strong customer experience builds trust, loyalty, and long-term value for a business.
Why does Customer Experience matter?
Customer Experience matters because it directly influences whether people stick around, come back, and recommend a brand to others. A single poor interaction, like a confusing checkout or a slow support response, can undo the goodwill built by great products or marketing.
Teams use CX research, such as journey mapping and customer feedback surveys, to spot friction points across channels and improve them. For example, a retailer might streamline returns and add proactive shipping updates after learning these moments caused the most frustration and churn.
