Hero section
/ˈhɪəroʊ ˈsɛkʃən/
A hero section is the large, prominent area at the top of a webpage that visitors see first, usually spanning the full width of the screen. It typically combines a strong visual (an image, illustration, or video) with a headline, short supporting text, and a primary call to action.
Its job is to instantly communicate what the product or page is about and guide visitors toward the next step. Because it's the first thing people notice, it sets the tone for the rest of the experience.
Why does a hero section matter?
A well-crafted hero section grabs attention within seconds and helps reduce bounce rate by making the page's value clear right away. It's often the deciding factor in whether a visitor keeps scrolling or leaves.
For example, a SaaS landing page might use a hero section with a bold headline like "Manage your team in one place," a short subtext, a "Start free trial" button, and a product screenshot. Designers usually keep it simple and uncluttered so the message and call to action stand out.
